I
returned home yesterday from spending the weekend with three of my favorite friends
from Missouri. We stayed in a hotel about 20 miles from my house... one with a pool, hot tub, and free breakfast. Not much reason to leave until 4 in the afternoon unless you are going to In-and-Out Burger, Ikea, Rosa's Tortilla Cafe, or Sprouts.
They
came in on Friday, and from the time they arrived at my house, we didn’t stop
talking… except when we were sleeping, which didn't consist of many hours, at all. However, there was a time, only a short few minutes in the 2am hour, where we were quiet but it was during a shocking scene in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Part 2.
I really don’t
know why time had to march on so quickly.
It
is amazing to me that, even though you haven’t seen your friends
for years, it’s like no time has ever passed when you see them again. Except you've
grown and changed, but not away from one another.
That’s
how it was for us.
We
talked about fun things and serious things, and we talked about things that made
us cry. We wondered why we didn’t spend much time physically together when we
lived closer, but it didn’t take long to realize it was because we were mothers
of younger children. They took priority over our own endeavors, friendships,
and entertainment. We even confessed things to each other we’d never discussed.
And in my opinion, we walked out of the hotel yesterday with an even stronger
friendship than we had before.
I
could feel my mood starting to become more solemn as the morning wore on
because I knew they were taking me home and heading back to Missouri, and I don’t
know when I’ll see them again. However, I was grateful they made it a priority,
took their time and resources and energy, to come to Texas to see me. Friends
who do that are blessings.
As
we go back to our normal lives of kids, husbands, work, school, church, responsibility, we know in our hearts
that we have people, friends, who
love us. They are in our corner, on our side, accepting us when we feel
unacceptable. And each of us knows that if we need someone, our friends will be
there.
